Paco de Lucia in British Western Movie

Hannie Caulder is a 1971 western starring Raquel Welch as a frontier woman seeking revenge on marauders who raped her and murdered her husband. Training her to shoot is a character played by Robert Culp. As the two take an evening stroll, a guitarist playing on the terrace is eventually revealed to be none other than Paco de Lucia - although he's clearly not playing what's on the soundtrack!

I first saw this film way back in the early 1980s but did not notice Paco's appearance. Later, in the 1990s, it was on late-night television when I got back from a gig. I was tired but decided to watch it anyhow (being an avid film buff, anything with that great a cast — Welch, Culp, Christopher Lee, Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin, Jack Elam  etc —  and

produced by the company behind some classic horror movies such as Witchfinder General and Blood on Satan's Claw was enough to try and stay awake for). When it got to this part of the movie, I'd almost fallen asleep when Paco appeared onscreen, causing me to do a double take. I thought I'd dreamed the whole thing, and had to verify it was actually him some time later from a videotape of the film.

Paco as a Centerfold in Teenage Girls' Comic Magazine Lily

Around 1975 and 1976, there was a concerted effort by Jesús Quintero (from the TV show El Loco de la Colina) to make a star and celebrity of Paco de Lucia on the back of his recent success with the No'1 rumba hit Entre Dos Aguas. This campaign for fame included all sorts of appearances on popular TV shows. During this time, Paco was marketed in the teenage girls' comic magazine Lily (subtitled "Revista Juvenil Femenina"), appearing as a centerfold pin-up — without guitar — in four consecutive 1975 issues (Nos. 697, 698, 699 & 700) and also in a 1976 issue — with guitar — of Super Lily (No.11). Issue 697 also contained a one-page feature on Paco (click here to view PDF). A video presentation of all the covers and posters can be viewed on my Estilo Flamenco Youtube Channel (click here),
